Placental Abruption

I had a placental abruption, and my baby was injured, do I have a case?

Placental abruption is a pregnancy complication, wherein the lining of the placenta separates from the uterus of the mother. It is a common cause of late pregnancy bleeding. Immediate attention by an OB/GYN is necessary in order to minimize risk to the baby and the mother. Treatment depends on how serious the abruption is and the gestational age of the fetus.

Placental abruption affects both the mother and baby. A mother may hemorrhage, or bleed profusely, requiring blood transfusions. A mother may need a hysterectomy, or suffer damage to her kidneys, liver and other organs. Placental abruption can be fatal if the degree of the abruption is serious enough.

As the mother is struggling with this complication, her baby can suffer from lack of oxygen, causing brain damage. The extent of the brain damage may vary from very serious, to slight. Some children suffer later with developmental delays and learning disabilities. If the abruption is very serious, the baby may die before or after birth.
